A Call to Arms

I’m delighted to be a member of Choice & Inference. It’s great to have an online forum to discuss formal epistemology and decision theory with all the clever people listed on the list of authors.

At the moment, though, something worries me about our author list. Out of 24 contributors, only two of us are women, and both are fairly junior women. Decision theory may be skewed in terms of gender, but this does not strike me as an accurate representation of the demographics. (If it is an accurate representation, we need to be even more pro-active about increasing women’s participation.)

Jake and Jonah have both been very open to suggestions that we do something to remedy the gender imbalance. Jonah has volunteered to email several prominent women in the field, inviting them to join our list of contributors. Our mailing list was hastily assembled and no doubt incomplete, so feel free to suggest potential contributors in the comments section (or volunteer yourself).

The comments are open for your suggestions about how we can be more inclusive.

  1. Roger Clarke says:

She’s not a senior person, but Sarah Moss was part of a really nice symposium on de se updating at the last APA Pacific. She’d be worth inviting.

Going through the schedules of the last few FEWs would also be a way of finding women to invite.

  2. Roger, thanks for the helpful suggestions. We’ve already invited Sarah (she and I were in grad school together so I’ve had plenty of chance to see her in action), but I’ll take a look at the FEW programs.

  3. Hi Rachael,
It has just occurred to me that the Society for Exact Philosophy has a large list of members. You can browse it here. Of course, the SEP has a much broader focus than C&I, but it may be worth a look.
    Best,
    J.

  4. I recommend inviting my colleagues Lara Buchak and Sherri Roush. Also, Susanna Rinard at MIT would be another obvious invitee.

Would that by any chance be the same Lara Buchak who’s Acting Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Berkley? I’ve followed some (And I only mean some) of her work in decision, game, and rational choice theory.

  6. Yes, Lara and I are both professors at Berkeley (as is Sherri Roush). BTW, Lara is Assistant Professor (she’s not “Acting”).
